Review: Almave Ámbar

So if anyone saw my Instagram story yesterday (shameless plug - please follow me @bubblyandboozeless on Instagram), you know I did some shopping for Cinco de Mayo. My original plan was to do a fun Cinco de Mayo post giving you all the details on my favorite margarita mixes, NA tequilas, and some recipes, so you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo in style whether you’re drinking or not! Never fear, this blog post is still coming, but as I was browsing in Total Wine, I stumbled upon something that deserved a post all to itself!

Almave is “the first distilled non-alcoholic blue agave spirit that takes the craft of tequila beyond proof” (per Almave.com). It’s worth mentioning that I went shopping specifically for tequila and only tequila (a promise I made to my boyfriend) and I picked this up without even realizing what it was. The bottle just spoke to me. It instantly reminded me of my favorite tequila (Don Julio 1942 AKA the premier tequila and the only one I refused to mix with anything)

Naturally, the first thing I did when I got home from my shopping spree was break open this bottle. In order to give you all a true review, I tried it by itself first. This is the only non-alcoholic spirit I have yet to try (and I’ve tried A LOT) that I would actually drink by itself. For anyone who hasn’t tried non-alcoholic hard liquors, I would describe them as spicy. This design is to simulate the ‘burn’ you get from drinking hard alcohol. As a martini fan, I do like the burn and appreciate this idea – it definitely makes you feel like you’re drinking hard liquor. With that being said, it is VERY HARD to drink alone.

Almave has a subtle spice to it to emulate true tequila, but it’s balanced out by the sweetness of the agave, making it actually very pleasant to drink alone. I’m sure it would be delicious in a margarita, but I don’t even know if that’s necessary. Honestly, I would drink this on the rocks, maybe even with a splash of lime, and call it a day.

So in summary, Almave is awesome and all former tequila fans should try it! It gives 1942 vibes in both looks (meaning it will look fantastic on your bar) and taste. The folks at Almave were clearly trying to make a sipping tequila, and boy did they succeed! I cannot wait to try the Blanco!
